Torrevieja Pipes & Drums were formed some years back in 2007 following a desire of a few like-minded people wanting to get together to play traditional Scottish piping tunes. The get together eventually blossomed into a Pipes & Drum band, which gradually expanded as they enjoyed entertaining the public both ex-pats and the local populace. Initial problems were the obtaining of a bass & tenor drums, which was resolved by, one of the founder members, he managed to find some in the United Kingdom, at a suitable price and he then had it shipped to Spain. The band proved to be very popular with the local town halls during the times of plentiful finances and the band found themselves appearing at Fiestas and Moor & Christian processions as knowledge of their unique style spread by word of mouth. Unfortunately due to the perennial factors of the ageing process some of the late night processions tended to take its toll especially when the event started at 12 midnight and the partying commenced after that! In the early days of the band financing for acquirement of matching kilts was a problem but very kindly Julie the then owner of Hoggies Bar on the San Luis Urbanization – provided sufficient funds to purchase kilts. To this day the same tartan, Heritage of Scotland is proudly worn. Finances have always been problematic, when one considers that to kit out a band member is a costly business, multiply that by between twelve and fifteen members and you have quite a hefty bill, you would get very little change from £12,000.00 Over the years donations from various venues have assisted in the purchase of matching sporrans, socks, shirts, glengarries, hackles, and most recently epaulets, pipe bag and drum covers and baseball hats for casual wear. So every little donation counts towards the running cost of the band.
